JAYAPURA, Papua (ANTARA) – The Papua Provincial Government announced that about 200 Catholic Papuans will attend Pope Francis’ ceremony during his visit to Vanimo, Papua New Guinea (PNG) on September 8.

Papua provincial communications and information office director Jerry Agus Yudianto said on Friday that the party is strengthening coordination and integration with Papua New Guinea.

“On Wednesday (August 21), we discussed with Papua New Guinea preparations for the visit of Pope Francis to Vanimo on September 8,” he said.

According to Yudianto, the meeting discussed the issue of allowing Indonesian nationals to witness Pope Francis’ visit.

“From this meeting, we can learn that more than 200 Catholics have registered through the Jayapura Diocese to attend Pope Francis’ visit,” he said.

Yudianto said that due to limited accommodation space in Vanimo, Catholic Papuans in Vanimo will return to Papua immediately on the same day after the event.

Meanwhile, Indonesian Consul General in Papua New Guinea Alexander Tangkuman Imanuel said Indonesian border crossers participating in the agenda must abide by established administrative regulations.

“We are ready to help Catholics meet their demands,” he noted.

Emmanuel then stressed that his side would also provide support for the transportation of Papuan Catholics during their visit to Vanimo.

“Transportation and accommodation in Vanimo are limited. We have to find a solution,” Emmanuel said.

Pope Francis is expected to arrive in Vanimo, Papua New Guinea on 8 September 2024 at approximately 15:15 local time.

The pope will also hold a public audience, but no mass, in the Vanimo Plains and make a private visit to the village of Barrow.

Before visiting Papua New Guinea, the pope will visit Indonesia on September 3. The next day, he will meet with Indonesian President Joko Widodo at the Merdeka Palace in Jakarta.

On September 5, the Pope will preside over Mass at the Gelora Bung Karno Stadium in Jakarta.
