SANTO DOMINGO – President Luis Abinader called for efforts to reach an agreement to improve the quality of education.

The President instructed the Economic and Social Council (CES) to convene relevant sectors of the education system to discuss the issue until a consensus is reached on the issue.

Likewise, he defined teachers as the “backbone” of school education and thanked them for their “dedication and commitment”.

“You are crucial in guiding our students on the path of learning. You are the architects of the future, shaping the minds and hearts of the next generation with your passion, patience and hard work. It is a great honor for you to be engaged in this noble work,” he said.

He spoke during the opening ceremony of the 2024-2025 school year, which was held at the Professor Iluminada Mejía Basic School in the Arroyo Hondo district of the National Region.

Depoliticization of the education system

He urged everyone to unite and “engage in the noble task of addressing the limitations facing the education system” and assured that the government was determined to work towards depoliticizing the education system, eliminating inefficiencies and increasing transparency.

The Head of State authorized the Economic and Social Council (CES) to reach specific commitments on issues such as the initial and training of teachers, who are the backbone of school education and it is necessary to ensure that everyone receives adequate training and continuous training to enable them to adapt to a changing world.

Likewise, he recommended the inclusion of information and communication technologies as powerful tools to enrich the learning process, as effective governance is essential to ensure that educational decisions are coherent and aligned with student needs, and that performance assessment should not be an end in itself but a tool to enhance the teaching enterprise.

Performance Evaluation

“We must urge all relevant authorities to start assessing the performance of our educators by the end of 2024,” he said.

Likewise, he said quality of education must be accompanied by adequate investment. “We must not allow waste but instead focus our resources on areas of instruction that truly impact our children’s education. “We must not only invest more, we must do better.”

“In addition, reform and expand employment education to meet the needs of national development, provide better employment opportunities for high school graduates, and establish more effective mechanisms to better connect parents and communities and strengthen the education system. Education research,” he stressed.

“A clear route and a credible vision must be outlined. That is why I ask everyone to get involved in the implementation of Horizon 2034, an open, collaborative program that addresses all the problems of our education system. Let us share our visions, but most importantly let us work together to find solutions.”

Education is everyone’s responsibility

He added that “education is the responsibility of society as a whole, not just teachers or the state. It is a commitment that involves everyone, from governments, institutions, families to every citizen who believes in the power of change.” Knowledge.

“In this context, we all have a role to play and each of us has the ability to contribute to building an education system that guarantees access and quality to every child and young person in our country,” he said.

He also recognized the “essential” support provided by Dominican families who are actively involved in their children’s education.

He said students have the potential to transform the nation and have the power to build a better future and urged them to dedicate this academic year to discovery, questioning and exploration and not be afraid to make mistakes as they contain valuable lessons that every effort counts and every step they take in their education is a step towards a future full of opportunities.
