Swedish pop band ABBA’s record company said on Thursday it had asked U.S. presidential candidate Donald Trump to stop playing its music at campaign rallies.
Universal Music Sweden said it had video showing Trump playing music by ABBA at at least one event.
“We have requested that the material be taken down and deleted,” Universal Music told AFP in an email.
“Universal Music Publishing and (record label) Polar Music International have not received any request to use the music and therefore have not provided any permission or license to Mr. Trump,” the statement said.
Swedish daily Svenska Dagblad said its reporters attended a Trump rally in Minnesota in July. Minnesota is known for its strong Swedish community. Winner Takes All is played.
The reporter said that after the song, a 10-minute video was shown on the big screen, in which ABBA sang some of their hits during their peak period, including Money, Money, Money and Dancing Queen.
Agnetha, Bjorn, Benny and Anni-Frid (the band’s name is made up of their initials) became the faces of disco around the world with their catchy tunes and sparkly costumes until they stopped performing in 1982.
The band is one of the latest artists to ask the US Republican presidential candidate not to use their music at rallies and events, including Bruce Springsteen, Neil Young, Celine Dion and the Rolling Stones.
