The 130th edition of Magal de Touba will explore the themes of the history of Mouridism since the creation of the Guide: the celebration of faith in God and the culture of work. Exiled by the colonial governments of Gabon and Mauritania, under house arrest in Dioubel, the founder of the Brotherhood always maintained the logic of peace and spread the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh), never straying from the pursuit of faith and the celebration of work.
Moreover, the colonial government’s decision to exile him on September 5, 1895, shows that he did not anywhere carry a message of hatred, violence or armed jihad. This saint bore his fate with endurance, resilience and philosophy in accordance with the teachings of his ultimate role model: the Prophet of Islam.
Since the message of Sheikh Ahmadou Bamba is universal and since he always conveys a message of peace and harmony, this event is celebrated with unparalleled enthusiasm throughout the country. Millions of believers gather in the holy city of Touba, some of them from the diaspora, especially from France, Spain, Italy and the United States. Foreign guests living among us are not excluded, nor are the diplomatic personnel in Dakar. Everyone participates in one way or another in Magar, which has become a public holiday.
The Magal is also an economic event of great importance, since it contributes an average of about 250 billion CFA francs to the country’s economic growth. Therefore, it is not uncommon to see foreign multinationals and organizations of global scope accompanying pilgrims to the holy city. Because the Magal is a celebration for Senegal and all socio-economic and political components of the country.
In Touba, we celebrate Bamba, but we also celebrate the example of Senegalese Islam, which fundamentally models tolerance, peace, harmony and concord. At a time when violent groups throughout the Sahel want to promote violent Islam, trying to unite people through force, especially armed force, the Senegalese Islam of brotherhood embodied by Mourideism and Tijaniyah remains an example of openness and dialogue between all religions. So much so that during the official Magal ceremony on the second day of the event, European and Arab ambassadors, international celebrities, representatives of the Senegalese diocese were present and honored by the Mouride General Caliph.
Senegal is a model for promoting dialogue between Muslims and Christians and for expressing more broadly the faith of peace, openness, fraternity and social cohesion. Magal plays an important role in this reality. It also pushes my country into the geopolitics of peace and civilizational dialogue.
