Vienna’s Social Democratic mayor Michael Ludwig described Dubcek as a European political figure. “Dubcek shaped the face of today’s Europe through his commitment to democracy, freedom and human rights,” Ludwig said. He added that he was pleased that the street was named after Dubcek and that the memory of the reformist politician who “fought for a democratic and humane society” would be preserved.
A native of western Slovakia, Dubcek became the embodiment of the attempted reform of the communist regime in Czechoslovakia in 1968, which ended with the invasion of Warsaw Pact troops in August. He signed a bill on the persecution of protesters on the first anniversary of the occupation under the so-called Penderek Law, which led to an ambiguous assessment of the politician. He was expelled from the party in 1970.
