The residents of Helmond have expressed their condolences to the family of the one-and-a-half-year-old girl who fell from a window on Wednesday evening. A sea of flowers and stuffed animals is seen at the market in Helmond, where the accident took place. The severely injured child died in hospital two days after the fall: “You can see that this has had an impact on people and that they want to remember this child,” said Toni Zelstegen during a visit to the memorial site.
The sad news has caused a sensation in Helmond. The statue of the shopping lady on the market is now surrounded by countless flowers, stuffed animals and candles in memory of the late girl. “You suddenly realize how quickly something like this can happen. It can happen to anyone,” said Sven de Mare. “I have children myself and I can’t imagine what it’s like to lose a child at such a young age. I hope these flowers will provide some support to the family.”
Other Helmond residents agreed. Nadia Scholten was clearly affected by the news: “When I heard the news I felt it was horrible, very intense.” Another passerby added: “Everyone is talking about it. I’m not from Helmond myself, but people in nearby villages are talking about it too. It’s really sad.”
The girl fell from a third-floor window of an apartment building in Helmond Market on Wednesday. She was seriously injured. Police earlier said she may have climbed onto the windowsill herself.
The girl’s parents were visiting in their native Poland when the accident happened. The girl lived with her grandmother in an apartment in the city center. Many responses are coming in. People are emotional, but many think the grandmother should have paid more attention. Passerby Sven disagrees: “Something like this happens in the blink of an eye, and then it’s too late.”
Nadia Scholten agrees. “Nine times you pay attention, and then one time you don’t. I don’t think you can blame anybody for that. I don’t think grandmothers are being left behind,” she enthused.
