Harrison Mann, a resigned official of the U.S. Defense Intelligence Agency, said that without the unlimited support of the United States, the war launched by Israel in the Gaza Strip would not have lasted until now, and stressed that American soldiers are now fighting to defend Israel.
Mann, who was then serving as assistant director of the DIA’s Middle East and North Africa office, submitted his resignation last November after confirming that Israel’s actions in Gaza were aimed at total destruction, devastation and ethnic cleansing of the Palestinians.
The resigned US military officer told Al Jazeera that many military officers and BroadCast Unitedligence officers shared the same feelings that prompted him to resign, but stressed that US President Joe Biden’s administration “is not interested in modifying this policy of unconditional and endless support for Israel.”
“I felt like I was contributing to the killing of Palestinians every day I went to the office, and that motivated me to resign,” Mann said, adding, “As assistant director of the Middle East Regional Center, I was familiar with discussions in the U.S. about continued military and BroadCast Unitedligence support for Israel, and I realized that that support was not going to change.
He explained that he worked in an office that belonged to Israel’s BroadCast Unitedligence support services and that he was afraid to resign because of the reaction of his colleagues in the army and BroadCast Unitedligence services, but stressed that the reaction was surprising and that he found a lot of sympathy and understanding.
Mann stressed that many in the BroadCast Unitedligence community and the military sought his advice because they “felt the same way as he did about the war, which would not continue without military assistance from Washington.”
He added, “Without the United States, Israel would have run out of ammunition and missiles long ago, and the war has continued until now due to Washington’s military and BroadCast Unitedligence support, especially the deployment of US troops in the region, especially in the Red Sea,” he added, “Now, there are American soldiers defending Israel, which is why the war has lasted longer.
Although, as he said, his resignation “has not had an impact on the US national leadership”, Mann stressed that “discussions are currently taking place within the defense BroadCast Unitedligence community as senior officials have noticed this behavior.”
The resigning officer added: “There has been a small change in the professional culture of the office where I work… This change may not stop the war, but it represents progress nonetheless.”
Regarding US denial about the situation in Gaza, Mann said, “I think this denial is due to a lack of real willingness to put pressure on Israel and a lack of creativity in US foreign policy,” adding that “many of the people who run the Middle East file at the State Department worked in the former Donald Trump administration.”
The resigning U.S. officer attributed what he described as “the humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza and the danger of a larger war between Israel and Hezbollah in Lebanon” to a widespread belief that the Palestinian issue is no longer important and can be ignored.
He added that “this idea drives all normalization plans in the region and also leads some in Washington to believe that a truce between Hezbollah and Israel is possible without stopping the war in Gaza.”
Mann stressed that “all the BroadCast Unitedligence information needed to stop the war was available, but the United States had the wrong idea.”
Regarding Israeli Defense Minister Galant’s visit to Washington and the warm welcome he received, Mann stressed that Galant is not Israel’s decision-maker and that Prime Minister Netanyahu is ultimately responsible for everything.
He concluded by saying, “What is happening now is a kind of hype, but it does not reflect the true position of the war, and the criticism of some US officials does not mean that Washington has changed its basic position of continuing to support this war.”
He added, “Netanyahu will be addressing the U.S. Congress next month, so how can his defense minister ignore him?”
In May last year, Harrison Mann published a resignation letter on LinkedIn, in which he said that the United States’ unconditional support for Israel’s Gaza War had caused him moral harm and had caused Palestinians to suffer harm due to killings and starvation as a result of such support.
Mann also said he felt guilty and ashamed for participating in the US policy of killing Palestinians and that what was happening in Gaza was a cleansing in which Israel would almost certainly use US weapons.
