Floods, landslides and road maintenance often force vehicles to stop moving. Bhutan’s Ministry of Transport has launched a campaign to raise public awareness of the importance of road safety and has launched a new navigation and networking system called SafeWatch.
Most of the country’s roads are blocked by rocks due to landslides and floods. Last year, 340 roads were blocked, 16% of which were main roads.
The system can be viewed on mobile devices such as Android, iOS and the Internet, and they will be able to provide the latest road conditions and provide information in a timely manner.
Danrach Chetri, deputy chief engineer of the department’s road maintenance planning division, said the Qin system allows users to easily discover sites, automate them or understand when they are closed for maintenance works.
A link to a road closure can show users the status of the road closure and can also provide updates on when repairs will be completed.
The department’s engineering officer Thinley Wangphyuk said the system was blocked and vehicles were blocked, and information about road maintenance, warnings and road closures would be provided.
Thinley Wangchuk said real-time reports of road closures due to snow, rock, gravel and flooding will be provided.
The system is a sub-project of the JICA cooperation program, which was launched in 2016 and will end in July 2023.
In 2019, the government’s public service department developed operational requirements for the system. The Bhutan government’s technical department prepared a 2022 feasibility study for the system.
The system was developed at a cost of Rs 800,000.
