Sibonelo Maphumulo, the former speaker of the Umzumbe local council who led a zero-sum mutiny that weakened the ANC, joined former president Jacob Zuma’s MKP party (MKP) with four other councillors and contested the recent Umzumbe by-election.
But his victory was bittersweet as he lost his senior position in parliament and three MPs lost their jobs.
The ANC’s number of seats in Umzumbe has been reduced to 17, equal to the IFP’s 17, and the MKP now has the status of kingmaker. The by-election is a crucial test of whether the MKP can maintain its stunning electoral performance.
