This is a house that many people arrive at and marvel at, and it is visited by those who want to know the fate of the chief, and it is also where he is buried.

To know more about the history of Kariyabwe leaders in Sendashonga, Kigali Today spoke to a 78-year-old man named Kajeebwami Fulgence who said he knew Kariyabwe leader Tomasi well because he watched him since he was a child and they often talked to him.

The old man said that Kariyabwete of Sendasonga ruled Uberuka, a position given to him by King Rudahigwa, who had ruled Rwanda for more years than he could remember.

He said he had the opportunity to speak to the chief who was very friendly to the people but he was upset because he left the throne without giving him the land he was promised.

“A piece of land, he will give it to others, in those days he leaves the kingdom, I will destroy it”.

He added, “If he gives me that land, I will be fine, except for the way I live now, we talked to him when he was still the chief but I was afraid of him as a strong ruler but when he left and ascended the throne, I relaxed and talked about everything.”

The old man said that there were still descendants of Chief Kalyabwit who were still alive, but the son he knew was called Kimene, who was the king’s secretary, and he also died there, and even now there were still signs of Kalyabwit’s authority, and there was a beautiful house that he had built, which showed his authority.

“I told them the house belonged to Chief Kariyakvit.”

It is one of the historic buildings of the Rulindo district, where a person has been appointed to protect it and monitor it daily to prevent it from being destroyed.

Kagyebwamy said both Kariyabwete and his wife Mwambalangwe Christiana had died, leaving behind children and grandchildren, some of whom lived in Kigali city.

Many people who come to this house are surprised that it is over 100 years old.
