On August 9, 2024, the Minister of Energy, Professor Amadouhaoua, visited the site of the 250 MW wind power plant, which is Savannah Energy Located in Magaria Makera, on the border of Madaoua and Malbaza provinces.
The Minister, accompanied by the Governor of Tawayé Province, Major Oumarou Tawayé, and ministry officials, reviewed the progress of the project. She stressed her initial support and the establishment of a supervisory committee to ensure timely completion of the task.
Governor Tawaye expressed satisfaction with the implementation of the project in the region and pledged his support for its speedy completion, recalling the commitment of the CNSP Chairman, General Abdourahamane Tiani, to energy sovereignty.
Mr. Sofiane Ferdjani, Director of Renewable Energy at Savannah Energy Niger, explained that the plant, scheduled for completion in 2027, will add 250 MW to the energy mix, representing 22% of the country’s needs. He also mentioned the benefits in terms of employment and skills transfer.
Mr Moussa Chetima, HSE Manager, gave a detailed presentation on the installation of the transmission towers, noting that the project will have limited impact on local wildlife and that power generation will commence in 2027.
The Tarka wind farm, being developed south of Tarhoua, will include up to 45 wind turbines and generate around 800 GWh of electricity per year for the Niger Electricity Company (NIGELEC) over 25 years. Savannah Energy is a UK company working on renewable energy projects in Africa with a strong commitment to environmental standards and governance.
