Smartphone maker Realme has launched a charger that can fully charge a phone in just 5 minutes.

The Chinese company claims that the new SuperSonic Charge technology can charge the phone at around 320 watts of power (i.e. 16 times more than a standard iPhone charger).

At the 828 Fanfest event in Shenzhen, the company demonstrated that the 4420 mAh battery can be fully charged in 4 minutes and 30 seconds, but Realme has yet to launch a smartphone that can absorb such a power.

The smartphone reached 26% charge after one minute of being connected to the power source, and reached 50% charge in less than two minutes. For a smartphone with a slightly smaller battery than the new Pixel 9, this means that a completely depleted battery can be fully charged in less than 5 minutes.

Another major innovation is that “the new Realme battery uses 4 separate cells, each of which can be charged simultaneously.” Typically, manufacturers such as Apple and Samsung opt for single cells because they offer more energy storage in a compact space.

However, despite using multiple batteries, Realme claims that its battery capacity is larger than the iPhone 15’s 3,349 mAh storage capacity, thanks to a folding battery design inspired by space solar panels.

“First, we cleverly miniaturized each battery cell into a layered structure to maximize space utilization, thereby achieving higher capacity,” said a company spokesperson. “Second, we folded four battery cells into satellite panels and connected them to a flexible charging pad.”

The resulting battery is also said to be flexible, meaning it could be used in the design of future foldable smartphones.

Early last year, the realme GT Neo 5 set a record for the fastest charging speed for a smartphone, fully charging in just nine and a half minutes with the help of a 240W charger.

It’s worth noting that Realme has not indicated when the technology will be launched on a larger scale.
