An adventure travel company called Untamed Borders plans trips to many of the world’s most interesting and hard-to-reach countries, many of which take place in countries ranked as the world’s most dangerous destinations in the 2024 Global Peace Index.
The company’s founder, James Wilcox, told the Daily Mail that what awaits tourists in the country might surprise everyone.
Regarding Iraq, James noted that it has an “amazing ancient history” due to its status as the center of the Islamic world, and that the Iraq Museum in Baghdad houses Assyrian artifacts dating back to 1350 BC.
James added: “Najaf and Karbala are among the holiest cities in the world for Shia Muslims and are great locations for pilgrimage. In the south, there is the Fens, a large area of wetlands about the size of Wales. There is also the mountains of northern Kurdistan, where the company organises a ski trip every year.”
“Overall, the situation in Iraq is improving – certainly from a pretty low level,” James said. “Things are moving in the right direction, more security, more peace, and the guides we’re traveling with around the country are seeing more roads and infrastructure being built.”
The newspaper talked about why “Iraq is dangerous”, noting that the US invasion of Iraq in 2003 led to the overthrow of dictator Saddam Hussein, and that the country has since suffered various conflicts, including the rise and fall of the Islamic State and the fall of multiple governments. It advises, including the UK and the US, not to travel to many parts of Iraq, which ranks 10th on the Global Peace Index as the least peaceful country in the world.
