A goat has been rescued after being trapped for five days on top of a 100ft high castle tower in County Donegal.
The goat was brought back to life in a massive rescue operation by Donegal Mountain Rescue and the ISPCA.
The white goat turned up at the 14th-century Northburg Castle in Greencastle on the Inishwen Peninsula, following an appeal from locals.
Local woman Claire Callery initially raised the alarm.
Other locals rushed to help the goat, with local man Andrew Connell trying to coax the animal down.
He placed ladders and planks of wood on the tower, hoping the wayward animal would decide to come down on its own.
He said: “I was on the roof and the goat refused to be caught, not even on the roof. I left a ladder and a board to help it come down.”
However, Andrew warned: “The ladder has no safety supports and is not suitable for people to attempt to climb under any circumstances.”
But it was revealed this afternoon that a joint rescue exercise had saved the goat.
A spokesperson for the charity Donegal Animal Rescue also revealed the real reason why the goat refused to come down.
A spokesman said: “After numerous rescue efforts by locals, the little goat, which had been trapped atop the castle for four nights, was finally rescued by members of the ISPCA and Donegal Mountain Rescue Team.
“However, the goat suffered injuries and a suspected fractured hind leg, which may have been the reason they were unable to climb down, and is currently receiving veterinary treatment.
“Praying for a full recovery for this little guy.”
