A three-year-old girl was taken to hospital after being attacked by a black bear at a private campground near Red Lodge, Montana, USA. The incident occurred on the evening of Sunday, August 11, when the child was in her tent and was surprised to see a female black bear attracted to an unsecured food source nearby. The incident led to a complete evacuation of the campground the next day.

Local authorities, represented by the Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks (FWP) agency, quickly took steps to capture the animal. Traps were set in the area, and the bear was finally captured and euthanized Monday afternoon. Although the animal had never shown signs of previous conflicts with humans, it seemed to be attracted to garbage, coolers, and food left outside tents.

This incident highlights the potential risks facing campers in areas where bears are common. Montana is often referred to as “bear country,” and encounters with these animals, including grizzlies and black bears, are not uncommon in the area. FWP reminds visitors and residents to take precautions to minimize the risk of such encounters. It is critical to store food and other odorous items away from tents and to ensure trash is placed in specially designed bear-proof trash cans.

Game warden Randy Hutzenbiler noted that despite authorities’ quick response, no updated information on the girl’s condition was available as of press time.
