A 7.1-magnitude earthquake struck southwestern Japan, triggering a tsunami warning, but there was no immediate sign of damage, the country’s meteorological agency said.
The Japan Meteorological Agency said the quake struck at around 4:43 pm (local time) Thursday near Miyazaki Prefecture in western Kyushu island.
Japanese Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshimasa Hayashi told reporters that no reports of abnormalities at the nuclear power plant had been received since the earthquake, and the government was examining the losses and casualties.
NHK reported that waves as high as 50 centimeters had been observed in Miyazaki Prefecture.
