It’s been about six months since ChatGPT was released to the public, and people around the world are realizing how powerful AI has become. Suddenly, we’re using AI chatbots to do all sorts of things, like Write rap, Taking the Bar Examand Identifying errors in computer code.
The wonder and excitement about ChatGPT and other AI platforms is mixed with anxiety: Will AI take our jobs? Will it undermine democracy? Will it kill us all? But there is still a glimmer of hope – economic Research. The study examined the customer service department of a large software company and found that ChatGPT significantly increased worker productivity. Even more interestingly, most of these gains came from lower-skilled workers, while higher-skilled workers showed only marginal improvements. In other words, AI narrowed the productivity gap between low-skilled and higher-skilled workers. This finding is very different from previous findings on the impact of technology on workers over the past four decades. An entire generation of economic research has shown that computers are a major force in increasing inequality. A force in shrinking the middle class.
David Autor is a professor at MIT and is widely considered one of the world’s greatest labor economists. He led a lot of early research on the computer age and labor markets. He believes this study and another similar one show that we can use artificial intelligence to expand job opportunities, lower barriers to entry into a variety of occupations, and reduce inequality.
