The gubernatorial candidate of the Popular Democratic Party (PPD), Jesús Manuel Ortiz, on Thursday attacked the private company LUMA Energy and the government for the dire situation facing families in the southern part of the island due to the lack of electricity.
At the same time, he classified the response provided by LUMA Energy to citizens today as a weak excuse. The president of the consortium, Juan Saca, explained that the failures that occurred this weekend were largely caused by vegetation that had not been cleared away.
“What is happening every day to a vital service like electricity is unsustainable. The state can no longer have any excuses. Saying that vegetation and wildlife are the source of the energy system’s problems makes a taunt to Puerto Ricans,” he said.
The PPD president also stated that “a week after the outages began, it is only today, Thursday, that they appear before the nation, giving a technical excuse that satisfies no one. LUMA would not have publicly given its version if it had not been for the mayors of Coamo, Santa Isabel, Caguas and Yabucoa who came out to denounce the problem and demanded the declaration of a state of emergency.”
Ortiz González mentioned that every day a home or business is without electricity “has the effect of worsening the quality of life of our people or affecting the economic development of the country. We cannot continue to allow concessions and excuses. It is time to enforce this contract or abolish it once and for all.”
The PPD gubernatorial candidate added, “The state believes LUMA has not lived up to the terms of its contract. Today, outages are increasing, information about LUMA’s performance is decreasing, and billions of dollars spent rebuilding the electric system are going nowhere. As a result, I will soon announce the creation of a task force of energy experts to document the noncompliance and make actionable recommendations to ensure an efficient system that meets the state’s needs.”
The PPD Chairman concluded by stating that his record against LUMA is factual because as a member of the House of Representatives, he was a co-author of various measures such as investigating contracts, monitoring contracts, deferring their implementation, reviewing compliance with its parameters, indicators, and the status of infrastructure improvement projects across the island.
