The National Union of Journalists (SNTP) reported on Wednesday, August 7, that the detained journalists and reporters have been charged with terrorism offences.
“We condemn the illegal and arbitrary use of anti-terrorism laws in Venezuela, especially against journalists and photojournalists detained during the country’s post-election protests. In all cases, the oath of private defence was prevented,” SNTP said in its account. X.
Among the cases reported is Yousner Alvarado, a photojournalist from Barinas, who appeared in a telematics hearing at the Special Court on July 31 and was charged with terrorism. He is currently detained at the Conas headquarters in Barinas.
Paul León, a photographer from Trujillo, appeared in a telematics hearing at the Special Court on August 6 and was charged with terrorism. He was initially detained at the Police Coordination 2.0 Zone and was later transferred to the DIP in Valera.
Deisy Peña, a photojournalist from Miranda, appeared before the telematics hearing on August 7 this year and was charged with terrorism. She was detained at the Quebrada Honda police headquarters and transferred to the Okumar del Tuy women’s prison.
José Gregorio Carnero, a journalist and political leader from Guarico, appeared before a special court with terrorism jurisdiction on August 6 and was charged with terrorism. He was transferred from Valle de la Pascua to the Cicpc in San Juan de los Morros.
