The appointment of Yahya Sinwar of the Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas) as the head of the Political Bureau, replacing Ismail Haniyeh, who was assassinated in Tehran last week, has sparked mixed reactions, with statements by Israeli occupation officials revealing the anger and fear of the occupation forces over this choice, which some see as tantamount to the creation of a Hamas “war committee”, while many see it as a clear and intentional message from the movement and support it.
Why Sinvar?
Geopolitical expert James Dorsey said the selection of Sinwar was a “statement of defiance” and that Hamas would “keep control” of Gaza and its members in the Palestinian territories despite Israel’s stated goal of eliminating the movement.
Powerful Message
Commenting on Sinwar’s appointment, a senior Hamas official told AFP that the move “sends a strong message to the occupation forces that Hamas is continuing on its path of resistance.”
Hugh Lovatt, a Middle East expert at the European Council on Foreign Relations, believes that the attack on the moderate Haniyeh “affects the internal balance of power in Sinwar.”
In this context, Tahani Mustafa, a Palestinian affairs analyst at the International Crisis Group, believes that this option “is equivalent to Hamas forming a war committee.”
Hamas “chose someone it knew would not yield at all,” she told AFP. She had moderates to choose from. In front of her was Khaled Meshaal, who was the second choice. But it was a clear and intentional message from the movement: if Israel persists in its extremism — and is actually killing its moderates — then Hamas can be just as extremist and uncompromising.
The occupation army’s chief of staff vowed on Wednesday to find and eliminate Yahya Sinwar.
“We will try to find him, attack him and replace the head of the (Hamas) political bureau again,” Halevy told soldiers, according to a statement released by his spokesman.
While support for Hamas’s choice of Sinwar continues, the Islamic Jihad Movement supported the decision and considered it “a strong message to the Zionist enemy that Hamas remains strong and cohesive and that the enemy has not gained anything from its actions despite the structure of a war of extermination.”
Lebanon’s Hezbollah congratulated the movement’s new leader, saying in a statement: “The election of Yahya Sinwar sends a strong message to the Zionist enemy that the Hamas movement is united in its decisions, firm in its principles and resolute in its stance. This is a momentous choice.”
