Police shooting kills man – Sri Lanka Mirror – Right to know. Power for change

A routine police check escalated into a deadly clash on the Kotugoda-Seduwa main road.

A police officer’s duty firearm discharged during an altercation with someone in a vehicle, killing a civilian.

The incident took place near the makeshift police checkpoint at the Kotugoda Masked junction when police were checking vehicles.

The situation quickly deteriorated when they approached a car travelling from Seeduwa to Kotugoda and the occupants reportedly tried to grab the policeman’s gun, which then went off.

According to a report from News First, a passenger in the car sustained serious injuries from the gunshot and was rushed to Negombo Hospital where he later died.

The deceased has been identified as 38-year-old Shanita Deshan, a resident of Pugoda.

After the tragedy, the remaining three passengers fled the scene.

The authorities have launched a comprehensive investigation to arrest those involved in the case.

In addition, a policeman was injured in the altercation and is currently receiving treatment at Negombo Hospital.
