Finance Minister Mohammed Amin Adam said that since January 2024, the government has invested over Ghana Cedis 10 billion in road infrastructure alone.
He said that since assuming office in 2017, the Akufo-Addo/Bawumia administration had made significant investments in the development of road networks, railways and air transport infrastructure to improve domestic trade and ensure the efficient flow of goods and services.
Dr. Amin Adam made this known on Wednesday in Accra during the commissioning of 2,240 earth-moving equipment and ancillary tools for 261 Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs).
President Nana Akufo-Addo commissioned the construction equipment at a grand ceremony at the Black Star Square in Accra.
The handover of construction equipment to MMDA is part of an initiative called the Regional Road Network Improvement Program (DRIP) that aims to improve the condition of road networks across the country.
The Minister said the DRIP initiative was a significant milestone in Ghana’s ongoing efforts to strengthen road infrastructure.
“The road network is the backbone of our economy, connecting communities, facilitating trade and ensuring essential services reach every corner of our country,” Dr Amin Adam said.
The Minister said the DRIP-2024 initiative is a testament to the government’s commitment to creating a more connected and prosperous future for all citizens.
He said the plan would not only improve the quality and safety of the country’s roads, but would also create a large number of jobs, stimulate the local economy, and promote overall development of local councils.
Dr Adam added: “By investing in our infrastructure, we are laying the foundation for continued economic growth and social progress.”
Meanwhile, about 2,240 earth-moving equipment were handed over to 261 MMDAs for road construction, upgrading and rehabilitation works.
The equipment, which includes bulldozers, rollers, graders, dump trucks and water tankers, is expected to create 10,000 jobs for auto mechanics, operators, technicians and drivers across the country.
The scheme is being overseen by the Ministry of Local Government, Decentralisation and Rural Development in partnership with the Ministry of Roads and Highways, the Ministry of Finance and the Regional Assembly Common Fund.
Local Government, Decentralization and Rural Development Secretary Martin Ajey-Mensah-Corsa said the road equipment handed over to the Metro Manila Development Department is unprecedented in the country’s history.
“This is the largest effort in the country’s history to empower the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority to maintain the roads under its jurisdiction in a timely and efficient manner,” Mr. Korsah said.
He believes that these devices and other aids will improve the road network in rural and urban areas and ensure the flow of goods and services.
The Minister noted that a good road network and its linkage with socio-economic activities will deepen accessibility to trade and basic services.
The minister said the government has put in place a strict monitoring and compliance mechanism to ensure proper use of the equipment and avoid misuse.
The Minister stressed the need for collaboration among implementing partner agencies to ensure proper use and management of the equipment.
