Cuban Mijaín Lopez is officially the greatest wrestler in the history of world wrestling.
The 130kg Greco-Roman wrestling competition at the Paris Olympics has come to an end, with world wrestling legend and four-time Olympic champion Mihaín Lopez of Cuba competing in the final against Yasmani Acosta Fernández, a Cuban athlete representing Chile who changed his sports nationality because he could not compete with Lopez in his home country.
The 41-year-old Cuban giant defeated his compatriot with a decisive 6-0 victory, becoming the only five-time Olympic champion in wrestling history.
After the victory, Lopez demonstratively took off his wrestling shoes, kissed them and placed them in the center of the mat, symbolizing the end of his greatest wrestling career since the Paris Olympics.
Lopez is one of eight athletes who have won four gold medals so far and is aiming for a fifth Olympic gold medal: now the Cuban is the leader in the elite individual category and in the team.
Achievement
The only five-time Olympic champion in men’s wrestling history (2008, 2012, 2016, 2020, 2024). Five-time world champion (2005, 2007, 2009, 2010, 2014) and three-time world championship silver medalist (2006, 2011, 2015), five-time US Games champion (2003, 2007, 2011, 2015, 2019).
Mihaín López was the flag bearer for the Cuban national team at the opening ceremonies of the 2008 Beijing Olympics, the 2012 London Olympics and the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics.
Interestingly, Mihain’s brother, Michel López Núñez, is involved in boxing and won a bronze medal in the heavyweight category at the 2004 Athens Olympics.
