At least 25 persons were arrested by soldiers on Wednesday for violating the curfew imposed by the Plateau State government on the state capital.
This brings to 51 the total number of arrests by security operatives since the imposition of a curfew in Jos on Sunday aimed at preventing thugs from hijacking the “End Bad Governance in Nigeria” protest and causing chaos in the state.
Prato police spokesman Arabo Alfred confirmed the news in a statement on Wednesday and praised young people for complying with the government-imposed curfew.
“The Commissioner of Police, Olugbemiga Adesina, however, expressed dismay over the actions of some youths who blatantly disregarded government directives and stepped out of their residences to attack armed policemen at Yen Tire market and other places in Jos North Local Government Area.
“The command wishes to reiterate that the state government’s decision to impose a curfew is in the best interest of all Plateau residents; therefore, we will ensure full compliance with this directive,” Alfred said in a statement.
The police spokesman explained that the Commissioner together with the heads of other security agencies conducted on-site assessments and surveillance patrols in various corners of the state capital to ascertain the level of compliance.
He said that during the operation, 26 suspects were arrested for not complying with curfew and attempting to break into homes and rob other people’s shops.
“In addition, on July 8, 2024, STF agents arrested 25 suspects for similar crimes and handed them over to the Prato State Criminal Investigation Department for further investigation,” the statement added.
He said the suspects have been investigated and charged.
“Again, the Commissioner of Police in Plateau wishes to use this medium to issue a stern warning against the waving of foreign flags anywhere in the state, stressing that Nigeria is a sovereign nation and anyone suspected of engaging in such treasonous acts will be arrested and prosecuted accordingly.
“The Prato State Police is committed to ensuring the safety of life and property and will not tolerate any form of looting, vandalism or anything else that could disrupt the fragile peace in Prato.
It added: “We call on all Plateau residents to urgently report any suspicious activities around them to the police control room.”
The Plateau State Governor, Caleb Mutfwang, on Wednesday relaxed the 24-hour curfew previously imposed on Jos, noting that residents of the affected Jos and Bukuru metropolises can now move freely between 2pm and 6pm daily until further notice, The PUNCH reports.
The governor urged residents within the Jos-Bukuru metropolis to cooperate with security operatives and report any suspicious activities for immediate action.
