The AU issued a statement saying that it welcomes the establishment of the AU Stabilization Mission in Somalia, abbreviated as AUSSOM.
The operation will replace the current ATMIS and is intended to support the federal government’s efforts to combat al-Shabaab and stabilize the country.
The African Union welcomed the commitment of Egypt and Djibouti to contribute troops to the operation.
This operation will also be part of bringing peace and stability to the areas liberated from Al-Shabaab.
Egypt’s participation in the visit comes at a time of tension between Somalia and Ethiopia, which has been caused by a memorandum of understanding between Ethiopia and Somaliland. On the other hand, Egypt and Ethiopia have disagreements on how to divide the waters of the Nile River that flows through the two countries, and the relations between the two countries are not good.
