Matthew Hudson-Smith wins silver medal Team UK In the men’s 400m final at the Paris Athletics Championships Olympic Games After a fierce competition.

The missed opportunity is a further disappointment for Hudson-Smith, from Wolverhampton, who won silver at the 2023 world championships and bronze in 2022.
But the British runner performed to perfection, smashing his personal best, and can hold his head high after taking silver against such strong competition.

A century on from Eric Liddell’s gold medal win at the Paris Olympics, which was made into the film Chariots of Fire, Hudson-Smith is hoping to repeat the feat tonight under the lights of the Stade de France.
The English runner started strongly but Grenada’s Kirani James, on the next track, was close behind as Jereem Richards struck hard early on on the inside track.
Hudson-Smith then picked up the pace and charged into the lead, where he remained until he was badly beaten by Hall with just a few metres left.
James and Richards had been in tight competition, but Zambia’s Muzala Samukonga, who was favored to medal before the competition began, ultimately took bronze.
He and Hall were strongest in the second half of the race, with many runners posting personal bests, including the American’s 43.40 seconds.
After the match, the British hopeful screamed in frustration before rushing over to congratulate the champion.
He broke down in tears as he reminisced about the final with friends and family, but when the dust settled the runner realised he had won a silver medal in one of the fastest 400m races in recent history.
After the race, two-time world 110m hurdles champion Colin Jackson told the BBC: “We feel so bad for Matt Hudson-Smith. He seemed to be doing everything just right.”
“He was 100 percent until 3.99 meters, but we have great respect for Quincy Hall.
“He never gave up. Just when it mattered, he found that extra gear, that little bit of energy.”
Meanwhile, four-time Olympic champion Michael Johnson praised his compatriot Hall’s performance.

“Quincy Hall is a great finisher. He did the same thing at the U.S. Olympic Championships,” he said.
“Look at his face, look at his power. He’s a finisher. He was green, his technique at the end of the game wasn’t the best. But he did what he had to do.”
Last year we decided to change the 400m hurdles to the 400m flat race and it has been a success.”
