Moscow – AFP
Thousands of people have left Russia’s Kursk border region since Ukraine launched its ground invasion 24 hours ago, said Alexey Smirnov, governor of the Kursk border region.
“The day before, with our help, thousands of people left the explosion zone by private transport,” Smirnov said in a video clip posted on Telegram. But he added that “the situation in the region is under control.” Russia’s Defense Ministry announced early on Wednesday that fighting in the Kursk region continued for a second day following the Ukrainian invasion.
The ministry confirmed on the social media platform that it had “prevented the enemy from entering Russian territory.” Ukraine has not commented on the incursion. Russian officials said the fighting left five people dead and 24 wounded, 13 of whom were taken to hospital.
The Ministry of Defense announced that 260 Ukrainian soldiers were killed and 50 armored vehicles were lost, including 7 tanks and 8 armored personnel carriers. This information could not be verified from independent sources.
