P-au-P, August 7, 2024 (AlterPresse) – From July 1 to 31, 2024, 52 earthquakes with magnitudes between 1.1 and 3.3 were recorded in the territory of the Republic of Haiti, according to a communiqué from the Bureau of Mines and Energy (Bme), in charge of the Technical Seismology Unit (Uts), consulted by the online agency AlterPresse.
Bme added that a total of 42 earthquakes occurred in June 2024.
Of the recorded earthquakes, 48% occurred offshore, including five along the northern fault (northern), which he warned indicated the risk of a tsunami if the conditions were met.
“During July 2024, the three provinces with the most severe shaking were Nips, with 17 earthquakes, accounting for 32.69%; the northwest, with 15 earthquakes, accounting for 28.85%; and the west, with eight earthquakes, accounting for 15.38%.”
Of the 52 earthquakes counted, or 76.9%, 40 occurred in these three geographical sectors of Haiti.
In addition, the Loyola Polytechnic Seismological Observatory (Ospl) of the Dominican Republic recorded 194 earthquakes across the island in July 2024, of which 193 (99.48%) had a magnitude less than 3.9.
Of the 194 recorded earthquakes, approximately 25% occurred in Haiti and 75% in the Dominican Republic.
“The seismic activity in the territory of Haiti’s neighbors (48,442 square kilometers) is three times greater than in Haiti (27,750 square kilometers). The study found that seismic activity is even stronger in the northern part of the Dominican Republic.”
208 earthquakes were recorded between January and April 2024, with magnitudes ranging from 0.9 to 4.4in the country, Bme has been notified.
An average of 52 earthquakes are recorded each month.
Bme recorded 58 earthquakes in March 2024 (the most), while 42 earthquakes were recorded in January 2024 (the least).
