There are some jobs we used to think were immune to automation. Although machines have transformed industries like farming and manufacturing, conventional wisdom held that they would never be able to perform so-called “knowledge work.” Robots could never replace lawyers or accountants — or journalists like us.
Well, ever since the release of AI tools like ChatGPT, it feels like no job is safe. AI can now write papers, generate computer code, and even pass the bar exam. Will work ever be the same again?
At Planet Money, we’re launching a new three-part series to look at what this new AI future looks like. Our goal: to have machines produce an entire Planet Money show.
In the first episode, we try to teach AI how to write scripts for us from scratch. Can AI do our research for us, interview our sources, and then bring it all together in creative, entertaining ways? We’ll discover how much of our own jobs can be automated—and what all of our jobs will soon look like.
