ABACO, BAHAMAS – Abaco was on the itinerary when District 7020 President Louis Wever of St. Maarten and his spouse, First Lady Amanda, visited the Bahamas in February 2022. They were invited to visit Neem Farm in Abaco and enjoy lunch, and complete some postponed Rotary business.
The Governor General and the First Lady officially installed a marker to commemorate a gift two years ago from the Bahamas Rotary Disaster Relief Organization; the official installation was hampered by the pandemic.
The donation of a Bobcat utility vehicle and an ABI 500-gallon water truck was invaluable to the recovery plan at Abaconim Farms after Hurricane Dorian struck Abaconim Island in 2019. The equipment was also originally intended for wildfire prevention. Thankfully, a neighboring farm owned by Rotarian Carey was saved when a wildfire on his farm was extinguished using the donated water truck.
When Hurricane Dorian struck Abaconim Island in September 2019, more than 2,000 trees (including various neem, citrus, and native trees) were destroyed or damaged across 120 acres of the island. A recovery management plan is underway.
“We are very grateful to the Rotary Club for providing farm equipment and have replaced approximately 180 fruit trees, which will contribute to local food security,” said Nick Miollis. “Everyone talks about growing cash crops, but not enough attention is paid to locally grown fruit trees, which are an important part of the local diet.”
Other Rotarians who attended the lunch and tour included Bahamas Rotary Club Assistant Governor Ken Strachan and members of the Abaco Rotary Club. The farm-fresh lunch was served with fresh coconut water and neem tea.
