As of May, nearly 60,000 18-year-olds had received child benefit for the first time.
From May this year, anyone aged 18 or over who is in full-time education or has a disability can receive Child Benefit until their 19th birthday.

Nearly 60,000 18-year-olds are receiving benefits after child benefit extension
- From May 2024, under the changes proposed by Minister Humphreys, Child Benefit will be extended to children aged 18 years in full-time education or with a disability.

Social Protection Minister Heather Humphreys TD announced today that almost 60,000 18-year-olds have been paid Child Benefit for the first time.
Minister Humphreys has received government approval to extend Child Benefit to 18-year-olds from May 1English Stone 2024.
Child Benefit is now paid to all 18-year-olds in full-time education, or those with a disability, until they are 19.day Birthday. Child benefit is paid at €140 per month.
To date, the measure has benefited more than 58,000 young people in full-time education or with a disability.
Minister Humphreys spoke today and said:
“I’m delighted to see so many young people and their families benefitting from this expanded child benefit, which is vital support for hard-working families.
“The measure I successfully brought forward through Government is now impacting the lives of families across the country.
“Children are starting primary school at the age of five, which is slightly later than before, and many children are also spending a transition year during secondary education. Extending child benefit to children aged 18 who are in full-time education or have a disability is a long-term positive change that will support the future of all families in Ireland.”

If the child turns 18 after May 2023 and is still in full-time education, they will be eligible for the grant again from May 2024 until they are 19.day Birthday.
If the child is in full-time education and has a current, valid education certificate with the Department of Education, parents/guardians do not need to reapply. Payments will be reactivated from May 2024 as long as the certificate is valid and payments will continue until a valid education certificate is in place or the child turns 19, whichever comes first.
If the educational certificate is 19day A new Education Certificate will be issued to the parent/guardian on the birthday before the Education Certificate expires. This must be completed and returned for Child Benefit payments to resume.
If your child turns 18 after May 2024, Child Benefit will automatically be extended to age 19.day Birthday or expiration date of current certificate.
The department will contact parents/guardians directly if they require proof of current education.
