According to a CNN Antena 3 source, the Ministry of Health decided that the drug Ozempic can still be sold in pharmacies until August 30. Ozempic will be officially withdrawn from Romanian pharmacies on September 1. The Ministry of Health sent this decision to pharmacies because there are still stocks on the market.
“Unfortunately, Ozempicul will indeed be withdrawn from the Romanian market. It is important to point out that the withdrawal is not related to safety reasons, i.e. no medical problems have occurred after taking Ozempic, the only reason for the withdrawal is financial. Basically, the costs of Ozempic can no longer meet the level required by the manufacturer. There are still other options regarding the withdrawal of this successful treatment for type 2 diabetes. The alternatives are tablets containing the same active substance (almost always semaglutide), or other treatments that can be injected, for example once a week (as in the case of Ozempic) and once a day.” Diabetes Society. Are there any alternatives? Ozempic Bogdan Timar, president of the Romanian Diabetes Association, said that there are alternatives to the drug.
“We can either consider a treatment with the same molecule, the same substance, but different from Ozempic. Currently it is available in tablet form. Ozempic is injected once a week. These tablets actually contain the same drug and are taken once a day, or can be taken once a week or daily after the injection treatment. In terms of effectiveness and safety, they are similar. Basically, we are talking about drugs that belong to the same therapeutic class and have the same mechanism of action”, explains Bogdan Timar.
