World Vision signs agreement to support vulnerable groups in addressing climate change

World Vision and the Trifinio Commission have signed an agreement to establish a coordination and technical cooperation framework to improve conditions for the most vulnerable and address the effects of climate change. The agreement covers the lack of drinking water, agricultural production, food and nutrition security, economic and social empowerment of women and youth, and other areas of common concern in the Trifinio region of Guatemala, El Salvador and Honduras.

The Trifinio Project The Trinational Commission is a regional organization of the Central American Integration System (SICA) that promotes environmental and territorial management in the Trifinio region. Its mission is to promote comprehensive, harmonious and balanced development in the border region shared by the three countries.

The Trifinio Plan was drawn up on the basis of a treaty signed by the Vice-Presidents of El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras on October 31, 1997. It was subsequently approved by the National Congresses of the countries and published in their official newspapers.

Trifinio covers an area of ​​7,541 km² and includes 45 municipalities: 8 in El Salvador, 15 in Guatemala and 22 in Honduras. The area has great potential due to its water resources, agricultural and agro-industrial production, biodiversity of global importance, and tourist and cultural attractions. In 2011, the area was declared the “Trifinio Fraternidad Transboundary Biosphere Reserve” by UNESCO.

The agreement is part of the “Greening the Dry Corridor of Central America” ​​initiative developed by World Vision, which aims to improve people’s lives through four pillars: regeneration and care of the environment, integrated management of water resources, risk and resilience, and food security and nutrition.

The signing of the agreement was attended by Ms. Liseth Oliveth Hernández Hernández, Executive Secretary and Legal Representative of the Trilateral Commission, and Mr. Jorge Galeano Rosa, Director of the CA4 Centre, representing World Vision Honduras, Guatemala and El Salvador.

The meeting was also attended by Ms. Karen Ramos, Director of World Vision Honduras, as well as community representatives and leaders, staff from World Vision and the Trifinio Program Tri-Country Committee.
