The U.S. Olympic women’s basketball team finished its group stage in the Paris Olympics with a 3-0 record and will continue its quest for an eighth consecutive gold medal against Nigeria in the quarterfinals on Wednesday.
The U.S. women’s 5×5 team last lost at the Olympics in the semifinals of the 1992 Barcelona Games, and there’s no reason to think that streak will end against Nigeria. The two teams met earlier this year at the FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournament, with the U.S. winning comfortably by 54 points, even without A’ja Wilson.
Wilson has emerged as the best player in the world in the WNBA this season, averaging 20.3 points, 9.7 rebounds, 2 steals and 2 blocks per game on 56.8% shooting in the tournament so far. She, along with reigning WNBA MVP Brianna Stewart, have formed a dynamic duo for Team USA that has been unstoppable so far. Stewart, in turn, is putting up 20.3 points on 62.5% shooting to go along with 6 rebounds and 2 blocks.
Nigeria upset medal favorites Australia in the tournament and then made history by becoming the first African team (male or female) to advance to the Olympic quarterfinals. The team was led by Ezinne Kalu, who averaged 19.3 points, 3.3 rebounds and 3 assists per game.
The Olympic women’s basketball tournament features 12 countries divided into three groups of four teams. The top two teams in each group are guaranteed a spot in the knockout rounds. Despite losing on Sunday, Germany finished in the top two of Group C and qualified for the quarterfinals.
When putting together the U.S. roster, the selection committee favored experienced veterans. Their collective resume is at least impressive, as each player has won a gold medal in the Olympics or the World Cup. The team is led by Wilson and Stewart, but there are many other notable names on the team, including experienced guard Diana TaurasiThis was her sixth and final Olympics.

Team USA Prospects
The U.S. women’s soccer team hasn’t lost a match in a major international tournament since 2006 and hasn’t lost a match at the Olympics since 1992. They are by far the best team in the world and are once again the favorites to win gold on Sunday.
Assuming they advance to the semifinals on Friday, they may face a tougher test in Australia, which is led by WNBA Defensive Player of the Year candidate Good MagbergWNBA Most Improved Player Award Contenders Alana Smith and former WNBA MVP Lauren Jackson.
