A spokesman for Jaime police called on Finnish football authorities not to schedule so-called “high-risk” matches on weekends to prevent such scenes from happening again.
Lahti police have launched an investigation into the suspected use of an explosive device during a football match between Lahti FC and Helsinki FC on Saturday.
Before, during and after the game, fans of both teams used a variety of pyrotechnic displays, including fireworks, torches and loud firecrackers.
On Saturday night, fans of Lahti Football Club lit torches and marched through the city center to the team’s home ground before the game, and torches and fireworks continued to be set off in the stadium.
According to a police release, HJK supporters threw loud firecrackers or air bombs (two types of fireworks) onto the playing field, which remained burning on the sidelines of the pitch as the match was ongoing.

The police statement added that before the match, the two groups of fans had attempted to confront each other several times but were stopped by police, many of whom were wearing riot gear.
“Police were able to prevent any such clashes. Police were well prepared as it was a high-risk game,” Vijumma said, adding that no casualties had been reported so far.
