A local nonprofit dedicated to helping Hoboken’s neediest residents has received approval to build a multi-purpose complex that will feature a large food pantry on the first floor.
At its June 25 meeting, the Hoboken Zoning Board unanimously approved an application to renovate 122 Adams St. The property was formerly home to a Knights of Columbus outpost and was recently acquired by the Hoboken Community Center.
The nonprofit operates a 96-room single-occupancy building for low-income residents in the former YMCA at 1301 Washington St. Their latest project aims to help residents on Hoboken’s West Side while building some new residential units.

The approved plans, designed by Nastasi Architects, call for a five-story mixed-use building with eight residential units on the top floor. Second-floor, rear-facing units will have private terraces, and the building is also planned to have a green roof.
A food storage facility on the first floor will be more than 3,700 square feet, along with a loading dock on the north side of the building. The development will have a modern look but will be primarily in keeping with the surrounding neighborhood.
The board approved a total of four variances in approving the project, including approval of eight units (but six allowed), a five-foot height increase variance, and no off-street parking (eleven parking spaces are required for the food pantry).
The Hoboken Community Center has not announced a specific timeline for breaking ground on the project, but the existing building at 122 Adams Street is already vacant.
