August 6, 2024 (Omdurman) – Sudanese army chief General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan will move his headquarters to Omdurman to personally lead military operations, a senior military officer said on Tuesday.
Burhan has been based in the eastern city of Port Sudan since leaving the army headquarters in Khartoum last August amid fighting with the Rapid Support Forces (RSF).
Army deputy commander Yasser Atta told soldiers in Omdurman that Burhan had requested a headquarters be prepared for him there and that it had been equipped. He added that army leaders, including Burhan, had no intention of ruling the country but were determined to fight the Rapid Security Forces.
In a statement to state television on Saturday, Atta said Burhan had offered to hand over power to his deputy and stressed that the military leadership had no intention of ruling the country.
The statement came ahead of talks scheduled for August 14 in Geneva, mediated by the United States and attended by Egypt, the United Nations, the African Union and the United Arab Emirates as observers.
Atta also reiterated accusations that the Forces for Free Change, a civilian political alliance, had provoked the conflict by encouraging the RSF to seize power, a charge the alliance denied.
