Labour MEP Alex Agius Saliba is one of the likely candidates for the Labour Party deputy leader’s party post after saying he would fully support changing the party constitution to allow MPs and MEPs to run for the position.
Agius Saliba posted on Facebook on Tuesday that in a bid to make the Labour Party open to everyone, he would support a third charter change to once again allow MPs and MEPs to run for the position of deputy leader in charge of party affairs.
“That was the common message I heard from party delegates over the next few days, who also asked me to become more directly involved within the Labour Party, as I did when I was chair of the Labour Forum,” he said.
Meanwhile, former Labour secretary-general Jason Micallef announced he was withdrawing his nomination for deputy leader following a meeting with Agius Saliba and Prime Minister Robert Abela, who he described as old friends.
Labour’s executive committee will meet on Tuesday evening to discuss a proposal to amend the party constitution to call for a special congress before August 23, when nominations for the election open.
