Lisbon– Argentine Angel Di Maria renewed his contract with Benfica until 2025 on Tuesday and said he is “hungry” to win more titles with the Portuguese side.
The Portuguese club spread the news of the renewal on its social networks on Tuesday, and the 36-year-old Argentina international will spend his fifth season in the “Eagles” jersey.
In an interview with Benfica media, the Albiceleste winger admitted that he was “happy” to spend another year with the team that finished second behind Sporting CP last season and have the chance to “get the final title” that he was unable to get that year.
He said he was happy about the compliments his teammates gave him, “it’s a very good thing”, although he clarified that he is a “normal boy” who always tries to win.
He added that he usually tries to support his colleagues and help them. He warned that he started the season with a “hunger” for more titles: “From the time I started until today, what I have always wanted is a championship,” he said.
The former Real Madrid player joined Benfica from Juventus in July 2023, although he had previously spent three seasons at the Portuguese club.
Continuity has been a recurring theme for ‘Fideo’ during his second spell at Benfica, particularly after his family suffered threats in their hometown of Rosario.
‘Eagles’ coach Roger Schmidt said last April that Angel Di Maria’s career was one of the best in “the whole of football” and his successful return to Benfica was a “wonderful story”. JS
