SAINT-DENIS, France (AP) — American Lana Redd, the coach of Olympic champions Andre De Grasse and Marcel Jacobs, has been kicked out of the Paris Olympics.
Reed was investigated by the U.S. Center for SafeSport for alleged sexual misconduct and was placed on one year of probation, which ended in May.
Through the Canadian Olympic Committee, he was appointed as the personal coach of the defending 200m champion De Grasse for the 2024 Paris Olympics. He is also the personal coach of Italian Jacobs, who won the 100m title in Tokyo three years ago, and several other sprinters.
The Canadian Olympic Committee said this week that “the decision to offer him this opportunity was based on the fact that his probation ended in May of this year, he has no other suspensions or sanctions, and he otherwise meets our eligibility requirements.”
The Canadian Olympic body added: “On Sunday, August 4, we became aware of new information and after speaking with Athletics Canada, it was unanimous that his eligibility be revoked.”
The move will prevent De Grasse from being without a coach when he defends his gold medal in the 200m semifinals and possibly the final.
De Grasse qualified for the semifinals after finishing second in the 200m preliminaries last Monday, behind Paris 100m champion Noah Lyles of the United States. Jacobs finished fifth in the 100m on Sunday and will also try to defend his gold medal with the Italian 4x100m relay team.
