SAINT-DENISE, France (AP) — American Cole Hocker made a splash in Olympic track and field, beating favorites Jakob Ingebrigsten and Josh Kerr by more than three seconds over his personal best to win the 1,500 meters.
Hawke won the race in an Olympic record time of 3 minutes 27.65 seconds, jumping from fifth to first place in the final 300 meters and passing two runners who had received much attention in the run-up.
Hawke, who was not among the favorites for gold, beat Cole by 14 hundredths of a second. Ingebrigsten led in the first 1,250 meters and finished fourth behind American Yared Nuguse.
It was the first American victory in the event since Matt Centrowitz won in Rio de Janeiro in 2016. It was also the first time an American had two shoulders on the podium in the 1,500 meters since the 1912 Olympics in Stockholm.
