Tropical Storm Debbie LIVE: Catastrophic flash flooding could hit Georgia and South Carolina as historic rains pummel Southeast

Tropical Storm Debbie has swept across the Southeast, killing at least five people.

A 64-year-old truck driver in Florida died when his truck overturned during heavy rain. The driver lost control on Florida’s I-75 freeway and the local exit Fox 13 report.

A 38-year-old woman and a 12-year-old boy were killed in Dixie County, Florida, when their car crashed into a guardrail on Sunday evening, just before Hurricane Debbie made landfall, according to local media reports. World TV report.

A 13-year-old boy died Monday morning in Fanning Springs, Florida, when a tree fell on his mobile home. On the same day, a 19-year-old boy died in Moultrie, Georgia, when a tree fell on his home.

Savannah Mayor Van Johnson said he’s “terrified” about the heavy rains expected to hit the Georgia coastal city Monday night from Tropical Storm Debbie.

“We prepare for the 100-year storm, but we’re not prepared for the 1,000-year storm, which is what we’re facing now,” Johnson told CNN.

The storm approached the Florida-Georgia border late Monday and was expected to continue drifting toward coastal Georgia and South Carolina throughout the week before eventually entering the Atlantic Ocean.

Tropical Storm Debbie is expected to move toward the Georgia coast late Tuesday, the National Hurricane Center said in an 8 a.m. ET update.

The weather service added that Debbie was “slowly” moving toward the northeast at 6 mph. Debbie is expected to drift back inland over South Carolina on Thursday.

A possible tornado in South Carolina allegedly caused cars to flip over and Walmart shopping carts to “go airborne.”

Moncks Corner Mayor Thomas Hamilton Jr. claimed a tornado struck near Highway 52 in the Berkeley County town early Tuesday morning.

“We had minor injuries from the glass from Walmart,” he told local news station Live 5 News.

He added that “shopping carts were flying in the air” around one local resident, who he said suffered minor injuries.

Hamilton also said that when the local fire department and police arrived at the scene for the so-called “hurricane shift,” they found an RV overturned.

The National Weather Service issued a new tornado watch for parts of North Carolina and South Carolina Tuesday morning.

The bulletin said nearly 2 million residents in the area from Charleston, South Carolina to Bergo, North Carolina, could be affected by the tornado, including 402 schools and 39 hospitals.

Half-inch hail could also hit both states, along with wind gusts up to 70 mph.

The alert is in effect until 5 p.m. ET Tuesday.

Ahead of Tropical Storm Debbie’s arrival, Florida has coordinated more than 17,000 power line maintenance technicians to be in place as soon as the extreme weather makes landfall.
