Turkish media revealed on Thursday that Turkish intelligence services conducted the largest prisoner exchange in recent years in the capital Ankara, involving 26 prisoners from seven countries.
Channel Quote "TR News" Turkish television reported a statement issued by the intelligence services: "The largest swap in recent years involved 26 prisoners held in prisons in seven different countries – the United States, Germany, Poland, Slovenia, Norway, Russia and Belarus – and took place on Thursday under the mediation of the Turkish State Intelligence Service in Ankara.".
According to the National Intelligence Service, 10 of the swapped people, including two minors, will go to Russia, 13 to Germany and three to the United States.
Believed to be a newspaper reporter "Wall Street Journal" Ivan Gershkovitch and former U.S. Marine Paul Whelan were among the prisoners swapped.
Earlier on Thursday, the agency reported "Bloomberg" Citing unnamed sources, it said Gershkovic and Whelan, who were convicted in Russia, were released as part of the exchange.
The agency said the United States and its allies would in turn hand over some prisoners to Moscow. At the same time, it has not yet specified who exactly Russia will receive.
