Iran’s appeals court has decided to halve the sentence of singer-songwriter Shervin Hajipour, who was sentenced to three years in prison earlier this year. He was convicted for writing the song “Baraye”, which became popular during the massive protests in Iran in late 2022, shortly after the death of a young woman, Mahsa Amini, after being arrested by Iran’s morality police. Hundreds of people have died in the protests, thousands have been arrested and dozens have been executed. Last night, a man was executed in Iran for stabbing a policeman to death during the November 2022 protests.
Hajipour announced on Instagram in March that he had been sentenced to three years in prison for inciting and fomenting unrest and thereby threatening national security. He was also sentenced to an additional eight months in prison for propaganda against the government.
The Court of Appeal has now reduced the sentence to approximately eighteen months.
Hajipour’s song, titled Baraye, which means justice in Persian, was based on Twitter posts about the protests. He won a Grammy for the song, which is said to be a call for freedom and women’s rights.
