08-06-24.- The Venezuelan Public Ministry (MP) announced this Monday the opening of a criminal investigation against María Corina Machado and Edmundo González, following their recent statements in which they sent messages to the police and Fanb officials.
The prosecutor’s office mentioned in a letter that opposition leaders also usurped functions by “falsely” declaring the election winner.
“The Public Ministry of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela informs the country that due to the dissemination of communiqués by former candidate Edmundo González and citizen Maria Corina Machado, who falsely declared the winner of the presidential election outside the one announced by the National Electoral Council (the only body qualified to do so), outside the Constitution and the law, and who openly incited police and military officials to violate the law; “it has been decided to open a criminal investigation against the two signatories of the invalid document,” the congressman said in his X account.
Likewise, the congressman stressed that the manifestos of Machado and González Urrutia showed “the possibility of committing crimes such as usurpation of functions, spreading false information to cause anxiety, incitement to disobey the law, sedition, criminal association and conspiracy.”
“The Public Ministry, as the head of criminal action and with the responsibility of being the guarantor of peace and stability in the country, will remain vigilant to prevent any actions that suggest violence or anxiety among the population and seek to repeat events that leave painful trauma for the entire Venezuelan family,” the lawmaker’s statement concluded.
