One in ten couples suffer from infertility

The International Infertility Association defines infertility as a situation where a woman wants a child but cannot conceive, and the International Infertility Association states that “those who have not conceived within two years despite not taking contraceptive measures and having a healthy sexual life” are considered infertile. It is said that if contraceptive measures are not taken, about 80% of couples will become pregnant within one year, about 90% will become pregnant within two years, and the remaining 10% will remain infertile. It is estimated that the number of patients receiving infertility treatment in Japan is about 470,000 (Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare 2002 Special Scientific Research).
