Election Commissioner Saman Sriratnayake said if the length of the ballot paper increases by just half an inch, the Election Commission’s expenses for one candidate will exceed Rs 20 crore.
Even if a ballot is half an inch longer, that compares to the cost of printing, the number of ballot boxes, the cost of transporting the boxes, the cost of polling station tickets, the number of workers to handle the boxes, the number of operators, etc. He pointed out that many of the expenses are increasing.
He further said that as compared to the increase in the number of candidates, the free mail, security and other expenses given to them will also increase.
The Commissioner noted that people’s money was being wasted unnecessarily as candidates were campaigning for purposes other than winning the presidential election.
