Sports Editorial – Harrison Butker, the Kansas City Chiefs’ Super Bowl LIV, LVII and LVVIII champion kicker, who has sparked controversy for his comments against women and the LGBT+ community, signed a four-year, $25.6 million contract extension with your team this Monday.
As a result of the agreement, Butker becomes the highest-paid kicker in the NFL at $6.4 million per year, surpassing Justin Tucker of the Baltimore Ravens and Jake Elliott of the Philadelphia Eagles, who each make $6 million.
Last May, Harrison’s graduation speech to students at Benedictine College in Atchison sparked outrage among women and the LGBT+ community.
“I think you women have been told the most pernicious lies. You can have a successful career in the world, but I daresay most people are more excited about their marriage and the children they’re going to bring into this world,” Kicker said during that speech.
In his speech, he also described LGTB+ Pride month as a “deadly sin.” Both statements drew criticism from different organizations, but he defended his remarks.
“There was a surprising level of hatred expressed by a lot of people, but it was a conscious decision I made and I don’t regret it at all,” Butker said days later of his words.
The 29-year-old kicker, who was born in Decatur, Georgia, has spent his entire NFL career with the Chiefs, whom he joined in 2017.
In seven seasons, he’s shooting 89.1 percent on field goals and 94.5 percent on extra points.
His career-long field goal was 62 yards, which he achieved in 2022.
In 19 playoff games, he’s shooting 88.9 percent on 36 field goal attempts and 95.4 percent on 65 extra point attempts. Efei
