Emerging women leaders gain confidence through senior executive leadership program

The Senior Executive Women Leadership Programme provides emerging women leaders in the Solomon Islands with the confidence and relevant knowledge and skills required to participate effectively in higher-level decision-making processes in their organisations.

Ms. Jenny Robb, Head of Marketing at Solomon Aviation, said: “This project has enhanced our knowledge and skills to enable us to participate effectively in various organizations.”

“Particularly at the higher levels of decision-making and leadership in day-to-day business operations.”

Ms Lobo is one of the latest batch of nine professional women from the Solomon Islands to participate in the Senior Executive Women’s Leadership Training Programme in 2024.

Three representatives from Solomon Airlines, including Jenny Lobo holding her certificate and chief host Pauline Soaki.

The program is designed specifically for women in executive roles who want to deepen their understanding of business operations, build a strong network with other senior women, develop confidence in areas such as governance, and refresh their professional brand.

Ms Lobo said the programme provided them with the opportunity and platform to refine, improve and strengthen their leadership skills and capabilities.

The training also aims to provide participants with relevant knowledge and skills in key areas which are important starting points to support them in building their overall leadership skills.

Ms Lindy Au, Financial and Operations Accountant at Solomon Telecom, said they were honoured to be among the latest batch of participants in this year’s programme.

“An important component of the programme was work ethics, which was an eye-opening issue for most of us and had the potential to bring out the best in us as women leaders, not only in our respective organisations but also in our social relationships,” she said.

Through the knowledge gained from the four-day training, participants are expected to gain a holistic understanding of leadership in higher decision-making positions and build on this foundation.

Ms Kamari Bainivalu, Capacity Development and Training Coordinator for the Australian-funded Solomon Islands Infrastructure Program (SIIP), believes such training can enable women to become leaders in any organisation they are part of.

“I found the training to be very stimulating and informative, providing a broad overview of areas such as leadership, organizational management and network support to enable me to be an effective leader of women in any organization or institution.

“I would highly recommend other women to take this course to further their careers,” she said.

Ms Pauline Soaki, the lead coordinator of the Senior Executives Women’s Leadership Programme since its launch in 2023, said the training has made women more confident in how to navigate different leadership styles and workplace cultures, and in different areas.

“It also builds some of their skills so they can understand financial reports because not everyone has a finance background,” she said.

“We know that not many women have support systems such as mentors to help them, so sometimes they feel challenged in their work. That’s why it’s important to join a network for support,” added Ms Soki.

Since the launch of the Senior Executive Women’s Leadership Program in 2023, a total of 65 women leaders have participated in the program, including the current cohort of 10 women leaders who are now in leadership positions in their respective organizations.

The Senior Executive Women Leadership Programme is a partnership between the Solomon Islands Institute of Accountants (ISIA), the Solomon Islands Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SICCI) and the Solomon Islands Business Women’s Association (SIWIBA).

The partner organizations aim to continue to strengthen their collaboration and support the advancement of female leaders to higher decision-making positions.

ISIA Chief Executive Officer, Ms. Pamela Alamu, in her remarks at the official end of the training, congratulated the participants: “On behalf of the partner organizations, I would like to congratulate all of you on the successful completion of this course. We look forward to hearing how you felt about this training and how you will develop your careers after today.

To continue to support professional women to progress to senior decision-making positions throughout their careers, partner organisations will continue to work together to create opportunities and increase women’s leadership skills and confidence. We intend to examine further initiatives to strengthen and support women to progress further in leadership roles.”

SICCI congratulated the graduates and expressed gratitude to the ISIA leadership for implementing the training program.

SICCI is optimistic that such programmes are crucial in promoting diversity and inclusion at the highest levels of corporate leadership.

“Investing in leadership development for female executives is not only a matter of fairness, it’s a strategic business imperative.

Mr James Dolarii, CEO of SICCI, added: “This training programme is vital as it provides women with the skills, confidence and networks required to lead effectively, drive innovation and improve decision-making processes within organisations.”

Ms. Rachel Rahii, CEO of SIWIBA, stressed the importance of the program: “Empowering women with leadership skills and confidence is critical to the growth of our businesses and organizations. This program is a testament to our commitment to developing strong female leaders who will drive positive change in our country.”
