New Zealand’s female pole vaulters have all qualified for Thursday’s final at the Stade de France.
Earlier, Eliza McCartney cleared 4.55 meters on her second attempt.
Olivia McTaggart and Imogen Ellis failed to reach that height, but they cleared 4.40m on their first attempt to advance to the final.
In the women’s gymnastics competition, Italy’s Alice D’Amato unexpectedly won the gold medal on the balance beam.
Simone Biles, chasing her eighth title, fell during a difficult routine and dropped to fifth.
Meanwhile, Connor Bell narrowly missed out on a place in the final.
Samoa’s Alex Ross took last place with the same distance as Bell (62.88m), but he achieved that on his first attempt, while Bell only did it on his second.
Earlier, the mixed triathlon team of Dylan McCullough, Nicole van der Kaye, Ainsley Thorpe and Hayden Wilde were not competitive from the start when Wilde collided with a French athlete in the first run.
Luuka Jones and Finn Butcher advanced to the quarterfinals of the canoe cross-country event in the early hours of Tuesday morning.
